Why baptism matters (and why Jesus did it first)

Baptism is one of those things almost everyone has seen and far fewer people have had explained. So here is the short version: baptism is a public picture of a private decision. It doesn't save you. It announces that you have already been saved.

Jesus himself was baptised at the start of his ministry. He had nothing to repent of, which is exactly the point — he was identifying with the people he came to rescue and setting the pattern for everyone who would follow him.

Going under the water pictures the death and burial of your old life. Coming up out of it pictures resurrection: a new life, made possible by what Jesus did, not by anything you managed to clean up on your own.

You don't need to have your life sorted out first. You don't need to be a certain age, from a certain background, or able to explain your faith perfectly. If you have decided to follow Jesus, the next step is baptism.
