Why Baptism Matters (And Why Jesus Did It First)

Baptism doesn’t save you — it publicly declares what Jesus has already done in your heart. Here’s why it matters, and why Jesus chose to be baptized first.

Why Baptism Matters (And Why Jesus Did It First)

For many people, baptism raises a lot of questions. Do I have to be baptized to be saved? What if I was baptized as a child? Why does baptism even matter?

If you’ve recently started following Jesus, baptism is one of the most important next steps you can take. It’s not because baptism saves you. It’s because baptism publicly declares what Jesus has already done in your heart.

More Than Just Water

Baptism is a powerful symbol. When a person is lowered into the water, it represents the old life being buried. When they come up out of the water, it represents new life in Christ.

The Apostle Paul described it this way:

"We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead… we too may live a new life."

Romans 6:4

Baptism tells a story. It’s the story of grace. It’s the story of forgiveness. It’s the story of a life made new.

Jesus Was Baptized Too

One of the most surprising things in the Bible is that Jesus chose to be baptized. Jesus had no sin to repent of. He didn’t need forgiveness. Yet He stepped into the Jordan River and allowed John the Baptist to baptize Him. Why? Because Jesus was modeling obedience and identifying with the people He came to save.

When Jesus was baptized, Scripture records something remarkable:

Before Jesus performed a miracle. Before He preached a sermon. Before He changed the world. He chose obedience.

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward transformation.

Baptism Is a Public Declaration

Following Jesus is personal. But it was never meant to be private. Baptism is your opportunity to tell the world: "I have decided to follow Jesus." It’s a celebration of what God has already done in your life — a milestone that reminds you, and everyone around you, that your identity has changed.

What If I’m Nervous?

Most people are. Standing in front of others can feel intimidating. But every baptism story is different. Some people cry. Some people smile. Some people come out of the water laughing. What they all have in common is this: they’re taking a step of faith. And God honors obedience.

Your Next Step

If you’ve said yes to Jesus but haven’t been baptized, don’t wait. You don’t need to know everything about the Bible. You don’t need to have your life completely together. You simply need to be willing to take your next step. At Stone Edge Church, we’d love to celebrate that moment with you.
